The Alcantara Gorges are about 50 km away from Catania City Centre
and La Ville Hotel.
The Alcantara Gorges are inside the Fiume Alcantara Valley. The
gorges are 25 metres high and 2 metres large in the narrowest points
and 4-5 metres in the largest points; the natural canyon, despite
what everybody thinks, has not been excavated for thousands of
years.
The charm of these "Gorges", is famous all over the world. 50
kilometres of river, with unusual naturalistic aspects. Big
geological and geothermal events have given to the basalts the
actual structure. It seems that in Prehistoric age the river used to
flow upon sediments of clay; then many volcanic eruptions brought
lots of lava who, going deep through the clay, discovered many
basaltic columns. The apotheosis of these natural sculptures is
visible in Contrada Larderia in the village of Motta Camastra. The
magnificence of Alcantara Gorges attracts tourists from all over the
world.
You can reach Alcantara Gorges by taking the SS 114 or the Highway
A18 (Catania - Messina) to Giardini Naxos then following to SS 185
towards Francavilla di Sicilia. On the way to Francavilla you’ll
find the Alcantara Gorges.
