PIAZZA ARMERINA
- It is a town of 20,000
inhabitants in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. Piazza
Armerina is famous all over the world for the Villa del Casale, a
sublime example of a luxurious Roman villa, that illustrates the
social and economic structures of the time.
Built in the middle of the 4th Century AD as a hunting lodge by a
Roman patrician (it is not known for sure who the owner was) the
Villa is home to some of the best preserved and extensive examples
of Roman mosaics spread over around 3500m. The Villa was built in
four main sections: the main entrance with its thermal baths, a
peristyle with living area and guest rooms, the private rooms of the
owner, complete with basilica (public hall) and a triclinium (dining
area) and elliptical courtyard. CALTAGIRONE - It is a town in the province of Catania, in Sicily. The city has been long famous for the production of pottery and terra-cotta wares. Nowadays the production is more and more oriented to artistic production of ceramics and terra-cotta sculptures. The city's name derives from the Arabic qal'at-al-ganom ("Castle of the Genies"). The city was almost completely destroyed by the severe earthquake of 1693. Many public and private buildings have then been reconstructed in Baroque style. Primarily for this reason, the city has been inserted, together with the surrounding territory in an area protected by the UNESCO World Heritage program. |
