The Cinema Museum, opened in 2003, is
situated in “Le Ciminiere” Cultural Exhibition Centre in Viale
Africa, Catania. It extends for 1000 sq. mt. on two levels.
About at the beginning of the XX° century, Catania was the
centre of a valuable cinema production; therefore the Regional
Province of Catania decided to remember that lucky period to
create the cinema museum, giving to the famous Swiss architect
and art-director François Confino the task to realize it.
The Cinema Museum is particularly dedicated
to the collectionist and documentaries and the relationship
between the Art Week and Sicily and the relationship between the
Cinema and Catania Cinematographic Industry from 1912 to 1917 ,
a rich creative period with respect to the activity of the Etna,
Katana, Maiorgana Jonia, and Sicula production groups. The tour
of the museum begins showing a collection of the first magic
lanterns and it continues with a virtual trip in the world of
cinema. In the projection room a video, introduced by the
Sicilian actor “ Lando Buzzanca”, presents the photograms of the
history of the cinema, from the silent films to the recent
special effects. The route continues with the scientific
discoveries of the technique of the projection of the moving
images. Then, there is a “Gallery of portraits”, with films,
photographs of sets and we can see scenes from famous films such
as the “Gattopardo” or the “Padrino”, while actors and directors
tell us their emotions about the world of cinema. By the side of
walls and stairs we can admire original posters of famous films.
