The church of
Sant’Agata al Carcere is today a sanctuary, and keeps some
of the most important relics of Sant’Agata.The building shows
elements from different ages, part of nave is baroque style,
with a barrel vault.The oldest part of the church dates back to
the fifteenth century and it shows cross vaults and ribs laying
on limestone columns, with Corinthian capitals.
One the right
side of the Crocifisso altar, two slabs in volcanic material ara
placed where the two footprints of the saint are
visible.According to the religious tradition Sant’Agata left
them, on the threshold of her prison on 31st January
, 251 AD.The church also keeps the coffin top, in which the
remains of Sant’Agata were brought back from Constantinople, on
17th August, 1126. A building next to the church
belonging to the Roman age, is pointed out as the prison of
Sant’Agata.
